Dog gestation calculator

Pick the breeding or ovulation date. We'll show roughly when the puppies are due, what week she's in right now, and what should happen next — vet visits, ultrasounds, when the whelping box goes up.

Dog gestation calculator

Pick the date she was bred or ovulated. We compute the whelping window, the gestation week she's in, and what's happening in there right now.

DateYYYY-MM-DD

Mid-range due date

June 11, 2026

Whelping window: June 6, 2026 to June 16, 2026. Smaller breeds tend earlier, larger breeds later.

Right now — day 30 of ~63

Week 5 — palpation possible

Vet abdominal palpation feasible around day 28-30 — fetuses feel like firm grapes (small dogs) or golf balls (large dogs). After day 35 the uterus fills with fluid and palpation becomes unreliable; switch to ultrasound or radiograph.

33 days to mid-range due date.

Week-by-week timeline
  1. Week 1 — fertilizationday 0-6

Embryos travel down the oviducts toward the uterus. No outward signs of pregnancy yet. The dog can still be bred — kennel mismatings are caught here if at all.

  2. Week 2 — embryos arrive in uterusday 7-13

Embryos reach the uterine horns and begin to implant. Still no visible signs to an owner; some dogs show mild appetite changes.

  3. Week 3 — implantation completesday 14-20

Embryos finish implanting. Ultrasound can detect pregnancy starting around day 21-25 — earliest reliable confirmation window.

  4. Week 4 — heartbeats detectableday 21-27

Fetal heartbeats become detectable on ultrasound. Organogenesis is underway. Morning sickness may appear briefly. Avoid all medications and vaccines unless vet-approved.

  5. Week 5 — palpation possibleday 28-34

Vet abdominal palpation feasible around day 28-30 — fetuses feel like firm grapes (small dogs) or golf balls (large dogs). After day 35 the uterus fills with fluid and palpation becomes unreliable; switch to ultrasound or radiograph.

  6. Week 6 — skeletal calcificationday 35-41

Fetal skeletons begin to calcify. Body shape changes become visible to the owner. Increase the dog's calorie intake gradually — by week 9 she'll need 1.5-2× maintenance kcal.

  7. Week 7 — radiographic visibilityday 42-48

Fetal skulls visible on x-ray around day 45 — most accurate count of puppies in the litter. Hair coats begin developing on the puppies. Set up the whelping box and let the dog acclimate.

  8. Week 8 — movement detectableday 49-55

Puppy movement becomes visible through the abdominal wall. Mom's appetite may drop temporarily as the uterus crowds the stomach. Switch to multiple small meals.

  9. Week 9 — whelping windowday 56-62

Birth typically occurs between days 58-68 (anchored to breeding) or 61-65 (anchored to ovulation). Watch for: rectal temperature drop below 100°F (38°C), restlessness, nesting, refusing food. Active labor follows 12-24 hours after the temperature drop.

The math
  • Reference: breeding date = 2026-04-09. Mid-range gestation = 63 days; published window = 58-68 days (10-day window — sperm can persist 5-7 days).
  • 30 days into gestation; 33 days to mid-range due date (2026-06-11).
  • Whelping window: 2026-06-06 (earliest) to 2026-06-16 (latest). Smaller breeds trend earlier; larger breeds later.
  • Source: AKC dog reproductive cycle reference + Merck Vet Manual canine reproduction. Individual dogs vary — confirmation by vet ultrasound (day 21-30) or radiograph (day 45+) is the reliable read.

Calculator output is an estimate, not a guarantee. Confirmation of pregnancy and litter size needs vet ultrasound (day 21-30) or radiograph (day 45+). Whelping is the dog's call, not the calendar's.

The 63-day rule, the 10-day reality

Canine gestation is 63 days from ovulation — the canonical AKC and Merck Veterinary Manual figure. From the LH surge / ovulation, the window is tight: 64 ± 1 day. From breeding date, the window is 10 days wide because sperm can persist 5-7 days in the uterus waiting for ovulation, which means the actual gestation clock might start up to a week after breeding. The two anchor points produce different whelping windows from the same biological event.

Breeders who do progesterone-timed breeding capture ovulation date directly and get the tighter window. Most owner-managed breedings don't — the calculator above honors that by widening the output when breeding date is the input.

The vet visits, scheduled to the timeline

  • Day 21-25 — first ultrasound. Confirms pregnancy. Heartbeats become visible. Rough fetal count possible but not reliable for the final number.
  • Day 28-30 — abdominal palpation. Fetuses feel like firm grapes (small breeds) or golf balls (large). After day 35 this becomes unreliable as the uterus fills with fluid; switch to ultrasound or radiograph.
  • Day 45-55 — radiograph for puppy count. Fetal skulls calcify and become radiographically visible. Earliest reliable count of the litter, which matters for whelping prep — knowing the count tells you when she's done pushing.
  • Day 56+ — temperature watch. Twice-daily rectal temperature. The drop below 100°F (38°C) is the 12-24-hour pre-labor signal.

Whelping signs and when to call the vet

Stage 1 labor: restlessness, nesting, panting, refusing food. 6-12 hours typical, can be longer for first-time mothers. Stage 2: visible contractions, abdominal effort, the first puppy within 30 minutes of hard pushing. Subsequent puppies every 30-60 minutes, with rest periods between.

Vet-call thresholds: 30+ minutes of hard contractions without a puppy. 2+ hours between puppies after the first. Green vaginal discharge before any puppy emerges (placental separation — emergency). Failure to start labor by day 70 from breeding (overdue, evaluation needed). Visible distress (shivering, collapse, persistent vomiting) at any point.

Most whelpings go fine without intervention. The job here is recognizing the cases that don't — the calendar plus the dog tell you which one you're in.

Questions worth asking

Is gestation 63 days from breeding or ovulation?

From ovulation. The 63-day number is the gestation length measured from the LH surge or ovulation event — that's the canonical figure veterinary references use. Anchored to breeding date, the apparent gestation is 58-68 days because sperm persists in the uterus for 5-7 days waiting for ovulation, so breeding can happen well before the actual conception event. If you have a progesterone-tested ovulation date, the 63-day number is tight (61-65). If you only have breeding date, expect a wider 10-day spread.

Why is the whelping window 10 days wide?

Because sperm timing is uncertain. A bitch can be bred on day -7 to day 0 of ovulation and still conceive — which means the actual gestation clock can start anywhere in that 7-day window. Breeders who do progesterone testing tighten the window because they catch ovulation directly. Without testing, breeding date is the only anchor, and the calculator has to widen to 10 days to honestly cover the conception uncertainty.

When can I confirm pregnancy?

Three windows, increasing in accuracy. Ultrasound from day 21-25 confirms pregnancy and shows heartbeats. Palpation at day 28-30 confirms feasible litter size; after day 35 the uterus fills with fluid and palpation becomes unreliable. Radiograph from day 45 onward gives the most accurate puppy count because fetal skulls have calcified and are radiographically visible. Most breeders schedule ultrasound around day 28 and radiograph around day 55.

How do I tell when whelping is starting?

Rectal temperature drop below 100°F (38°C) is the 12-24-hour pre-labor warning. Stage 1 labor (restlessness, nesting, panting, refusing food) lasts 6-12 hours. Stage 2 (active pushing, puppies born) starts when temperature has dropped and contractions are visible. The first puppy should arrive within 30 minutes of hard pushing; subsequent puppies every 30-60 minutes. Hard contractions for more than 30 minutes without a puppy, or 2+ hours between puppies, is a possible-dystocia vet call.

What if my dog goes past day 68 from breeding?

Day 68 from breeding is still within the published range; some bitches are simply on the long end. Day 70+ from breeding without labor signs is when most reproduction veterinarians want to see the dog. Beyond day 72, fetal stress becomes a real concern and a planned C-section may be safer than continued waiting. Trust the dog — if she's healthy and the puppies are still moving (you can see abdominal movement), the wait is usually fine. But the vet conversation at day 70 is worth having.
